The Virginia State Police Dive Team, Atlantis Divers and many of the area fire
and rescue squad showed up for this year’s James River Cleanup. Our
focus this year was making the river safer for swimmers and Swift Water Rescue
teams by removing debris from various sites along the river.

The Virginia State Police Dive Team, led by Mike Berry,
First Sergeant with the Virginia State Police has partnered
with Atlantis Divers to bring back the James River Clean
Up. Sergeant Berry serves as the Search and Recovery Dive
Team Operations Coordinator and Head Diving Instructor for
the Virginia State Police.
Sergeant Berry has teamed with
Atlantis Divers to help clean up and maintain the James River.
Richmond’s largest
and most popular park is the James River Park System. Over
550 acres of the river shoreline and islands encompass this
beautiful park – just blocks from downtown Richmond.
The river rapids, beautiful scenery, forests and fields are
a delightful retreat for all kinds of activities – hiking,
white water kayaking and rafting, canoeing, fishing, jogging,
nature walks, and so on.
We
are putting together the team now. We are looking for rescue
divers as a minimum certification and preferably divers
with wreck diving/search and recovery diving certification
or experience. You must be comfortable with limited visibility
diving. You also must have a great attitude, good sense of
humor (you can’t believe what some people have pulled
out of the James River) and a desire to help clean up the
River and give back to the community. If you don’t
have all the diving experience or certifications recommended,
you can still help with diver support and shore clean up
or we can help you continue your dive education.
If you would like to be a part of the James River Clean
Up Dive Team – please stop by Atlantis Divers with
your certifications and logbook.
